RIP Cory Smoot

The metal community is in mourning today at the news of the death of GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot (aka Flattus Maximus).  Smoot is considered the true incarnation of Flattus (the 5th), because he has portrayed him the longest.  Also a talented record producer, Smoot produced the latest 3 releases from the band, Beyond Hell (2006), Lust In Space (2009), and Bloody Pit Of Horror (2010).

From Dave Brockie (aka Oderus Urungus):  "It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their longtime guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing."

Heavy Metal Relief Efforts to See Resurgence

Thanks to the estate of heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio, a 1985 famine relief song and film, "Stars" (video above) will be re-released to the world in the coming months on DVD and CD.  RollingStone.com reports that in the meantime the estate "has a full slate of projects on the horizon to honor Dio's memory and raise funds for the "Stand Up And Shout" Cancer Fund. Everything kicks off tonight at the Playboy Mansion in L.A. with an awards ceremony – with each award named after a Dio song."
