Groovy Groves

If you've read this blog before then you know I have an appreciation for the soulful side of moombah.  You'll also more than likely be aware that I am an even bigger fan of the "old school" moombah-heads out there; of this short list there are a few people who rest atop.  Obviously purveyors like Nada, Munchi, and David Heartbreak have a certain place in any fan's heart but I'd say relaxing slightly below these "big three" for me are the two gentlemen responsible for this new free compilation.  Jon Kwest and Pickster One are names any MTH reader should be quite familiar with; their tunes have graced these hallowed pages since near the inception so it should surprise none of you that I'm going to hype the living shit outta their latest collaboration, Sex Tape.  This is volume 1 of what I hope will be a vast collection of expressive jams known as the Soul Series.  Download it RIGHT HERE.

These tracks don't disappoint; Kwest takes the lead off spot--not surprising, he was a huge part of the early innovations in moombahsoul with his contributions to Heartbreaks initial three comps in the movement.  The PHX don Pickster One grabs the baton and leisurely cruises down the back stretch with his flip of Lynae's soul lifting vocal for "Never Forget".  Of this release Pickster told me:
"The beautiful thing about Moombahton is that there is so much room for all these different styles within the genre. The sexy Soulful side of Moombah held a big part of the genre's development in its early stages. Me and Kwest are just trying to keep that side of things going."
Also featured on (as stated earlier) this freshman offering of the Soul Series is FL moombahtonista Big Makk who brings his well trained ear to the party with the lurky and yet somehow danceable original "What You Need".

The release closes with two more tracks from the stewards of soul (Kwest & Pickster) and leaves me longing for many more volumes to come (Pickster's "Lovely Day" remix will certainly be a dance floor jam in the coming months).  With the summer eagerly awaiting our arrival, I foresee many pool parties and patio jam sessions taking place with this and the future releases as soundtrack; I for one look forward with glee to the icy cocktails that will surely go along with these siorées.

Just Another Midweek Pull

What's that you say???  You need some new tracks to freshen up your iPod??  Well looky what we've got for you today!  Freshness just as you should expect from us each Wednesday to get you on through to the end of the week.  Today let's start things off with some LB flavor.  Coming straight outta San Diego we got Acis with a discofied flip of the Dr. Dre and Snoop classic "Nuthin' But A G Thang".

Heard this today and had to drop it on ya...DJR hooked up with some homies and brought the HEAT, it's from all the way back in 2010!!!  Grab the Dutch Invasion EP from Southside Recordings.

Here's another club track from the Bmore legend Jon Kwest...it's a free download so grab it ASAP.

Dig the kicks in this new one from 5kin And Bone5 plus really loving the ambience. Got a real old school wubby garage feel to it. Plus FREE DOWNLOAD!! WOOT!

Yet another flip of Major Lazer's latest...this time Dutch producer Fellow gives it an even more reggae feel.

I was really getting tired of this current Trap movement...then I played this track and suddenly I'm back to it!! Nothing like some dark ass music to snap me out of a funk. Good look Steve Starks and Nacey.

FREE DOWNLOAD from the duder Skinny Friedman. This NYC producer is 1/2 of the Philadelphianz and this track is from his forthcoming release, Trap 2.0.

Last but certainly not least, a little moombashment from El Cuco don Mendez. My man is doing mad work right now and this is a must listen. Also make sure to cop his YMCMB boot while it's still up.

There you have it!  Eight more amazing cuts to hopefully tide you over till this weekend's massive parties (I know you college kids are getting antsy for the semester to end).  Fear not!  We shall return next week with more and more and more of the biggest and best in the moombahton world.  Until then make sure to check us out on facebook, twitter, and soundcloud to see what we're up to in our neck of the LBC.  PEACE, I'm outta here.

Monday Jump Off

why they call you new-new?
My oh my, the weekend flies by far to quickly lately and we've landed yet again here in the studio digging for some fresh tracks to get your week rolling.  I always wanna just keep hitting that snooze button on a Monday morning especially when it's half past four and I've gotta drive 30+ miles into work.  But now I'm wide awake and ready to give you some special stuff so lets get it going!

This track is coming from the dude DJ Melo from an apparently new soundcloud page but regardless of where it's posted, this sucker is classic Melo through and through.  Love the latin hook that drops into bleepy, bass driven madness.  LETS GO!

This special ReKwest dropped over the weekend and I couldn't wait to blow it up.  My fondness for this DC native knows little bounds especially when it comes to his moombahsoul stylings. So keep pushing my dude, everything you put out is on FIRE.

Next up a pair of remixes from the Bromance Records crew.  G.Vump and

Gesaffelstein going in deep on these ones.  They're taking on Lana Del Rey in a contest to see who is the most hip and IMHO the frenchmen take the cake.  Lending their signature styling to her soft vocal performance is just enough to get my feet shuffling here on a lazy Monday morning.

This one is perplexing.  I first came across the talented DJR when he teamed up with the homies 2Deep on their Otra Noche release and I must say, this new track is pretty impressive.  I enjoy how he says FU to any sort of template and just builds this beat into a monster at his own pace.  ¡DALE!

Neki Stranac...what more do I have to say here??  Every track I come across by this cat is absolutely bonkers.  So glad to keep finding more and more heaters from the Serbian genie to blow up my speakers.

Here are a couple from the President of Rot 10 Musik, first up is Kid Cedek's contribution to last month's Winter Of Moombahton compilation.

And here we have the winner of the Kid's "Sientelo" remix contest, AGLORY.  Check out the rest of the winners HERE.

You know I GOTTA represent for the kids 2Deep.  The LA duo is at it again, this time teaming up with Get Ghost for a slammin' beat that'll get your head nodding.  They seem to be getting down with the core shit and you know I like it heavy.

The aussie madman J-Trick coming at us all with some more free tunes, this time he's merging Gabba with his signature blend of moombah.  Squeaky as hell with a heavy ass bass, that's how he rolls and we here at MTH respect that fully.

Oh man, I wasn't sure what to think of this Selena track from DJ Madd OD, but then I hit play and immediately was nodding my head along with it.  Love these laid back 80's feel type tracks once they get super dembow'd out so big ups to the dude!

Here's something a little wild.  Not really sure where the inspiration for this "Congo Safari Remix" comes from but I for one would like to tip my cap to GAYMISTERIO for going out on a limb with this version of Diplo's "Express Yourself".  Nothing like a little crazy music to get you up and about on a Monday so pump this one and piss off your neighbors as you're getting ready to start your week.

Heartbreak promises this will be his final trap bubblin' track and we'll hold him to his word.  Everyone knows this dude loves experimenting with any and all genres so we applaud him for dipping his quill into this dirtified style and we'll gratefully post this sucker here for all to enjoy.
That's gonna do it for today's newness, wanna thank all the featured artists for continuing to pump out the jams for us to rock along to.  I hope this helps you shake the weekend funk off you!  PARTY ON!

Friday's Are For MIXTAPES

There are a few things that bring me joy on a Friday morning.  Some delicious fried eggs, new episodes of Dragonball GT, and of course fresh and clean mixtapes to get the weekend rocking.  Today we're featuring the latest episode of the Tiki Cha Cha Club along with tapes from Jon Kwest, DJ EJ, and many more.

Have a blast this weekend!  Party down and be safe!

HIGHLY Anticipated WMC Comp

It's curious that the Winter Of Moombahton compilation should be released on the 2nd day of spring but who am I to question the reasoning of this amazing group of artists; after all, last years Spring Of Moombahton didn't come out until July.  Compiled by none other than the great Jon Kwest, this sucker is fully loaded with hot new tracks from some of the movements biggest players and up and comers.  Just in time for the Winter Music Conference, DJ Mag imagines moombahton in, "a Rocky training montage as it prepares for its shot at the crown".  If it's on the verge of really blowing up worldwide we here at MTH feel like these artists Kwest has collected are a fine example of it.  Grab the whole comp HERE and check previews of some of my favs below.

Cy Kosis is KILLING it, literally!  It's a massacre.

Arizona dons Pickster & Melo team up for yet another bass filled BEAST.

This Kwest track is HANDS DOWN my favorite on the comp.  Real dark and dirty.

Cañamojoso first came to my attention via a new Kickstarter campaign launched by Lightening Eyez and company advocating for the legalization of MJ.  Get all the info HERE.

A Little Jonny Kwest for your Thursday

As I'm sure you know, we here at MTH are huge supporters of Bmore's finest Jon Kwest.  So today I just wanna blast off a few of his latest tracks we have yet to feature.
Jon Kwest - Shot Caller (new dl link in description) by Jon Kwest
Up first here's a Bmore club troll track that cries out for passionate foot stompage; or possibly a ride through the hood in a lowered wagon with speakers blasting.
Good Love (new dl link in description) by Jon Kwest
Here's a soul inspired jaunt by the moombah maestro, another in a list of classic laid back relaxin tracks.  This song is available for download HERE.
Don Valdez - Cera Caliente (Jon Kwest Remx) by Jon Kwest
This track was a featured remix on Don Valdez' EP out earlier this month that we featured over on the tumblr.  Probably my favorite track off the 8 song release that also carries mixes from Big Makk, Cam Jus, and Obeyah among others.
Jealousy by Jon Kwest
And finally we have Kwest heading back into the footwork region of his production.  Another flavorful lurking drum beat perfect for that stroll down the block on a cold morning.

DOWNLOAD SIDE1: LuV DrunK
"LuV DrunK, cause imagine that feeling when u have butterflies in your stomach and you can’t wait to finish work so that you can be with the one u luv and u can’t bear to be without them for even one moment.   You’re joined at the hip and you can see no wrong in your luved one, no matter what they say or do, which football team they support or what music they dig!  That’s being LuV DrunK !"

DOWNLOAD SIDE2: LuVved Up
"LuVved Up, cause you’re you’re sitting together in a cinema, walking in the park or on a beach, holding hands at all times.  The air smells fresh, the sky is clear and the world is a beautiful place.  You have no financial worries, you don’t care about messing up your exams or about being late for work.  But you do care about not seeing or being with the one u luv and not being able to take them out or buy them something nice.   That’s being LuVved Up!"

Jon Kwest Heading West in Support of Debut

"I've seen....attack ships on fire off the shores of Orion"
His Last Don EP comes out next Tuesday but it looks like Jon Kwest and Think 2wice Records are giving everyone a listen early.  This comes ahead of a west coast trip for the Bmore native who will play at San Francisco's SOM-Bar this Sunday at Moombah Sauce.  As far as what he's prepared for, Kwest told SF Station, "Being somewhere where people actually want to be is fun. I have some Bay Area songs I’m gonna play, see what peoples reactions are." Check out a selection from Kwest's forthcoming release.  And follow the jump for two bonus remixes!
Skratch Riddim by Jon Kwest
This is really my favorite Kwest original of the bunch as it showcases his bouncy nature.  It feels like I'm already in the club getting ready to shuffle onto the dance floor after a couple drinks at the bar.
Stabbin Cabin by Jon Kwest
Kwest turns to one of his many specialties here with "Stabbin Cabin", a laid back soul filled track that calls on its listener to keep up the pace.

BEST OF 2011

chicka yeah!
2011 has been the biggest year in the short history of the Moombahton movement so we here at Metal Top Hat wanted to take the time to run down our top 5 releases of the year.
5) Moombahsoul Vol. 1
Heartbreak's June compilation showcased the sexiest side of Moombahton.  Fans of the movement know it all began with "Shy Day" and blossomed into three volumes of fun in the summer of 2011 and this one started the ball rolling.  Heavy hitters DJ Melo, Riot Earp, Pickster One, Jon Kwest, Munchi, and of course David Heartbreak lined up to drop some smoothness on all of us.  Great for a summertime cruise through your neighborhood or for grooving with friends at a barbeque, the soulful tracks ushered in the warm temps with style and grace and still rock dance floors well into the cold months.
The Weeknd "Rolling Stone" ( Heartbreak's Remix ) by David Heartbreak Pickster - Stay Together Feat. Kris Hill by PicksterOne
DJ Melo & Jon Kwest - Ecstasy by azdjmelo
4) Verano Del Moombahton
Little material came into the blogosphere from pioneer Munchi this past year following a 2010 filled with releases.  One of the finest compilations to rise above the clatter was his summer release, Verano Del Moombahton.  Here again we're introduced to moombahton's versatility with tracks like "Jimi Knows" transforming nearly any type of tune into a dance floor destroyer.  Pickster One, Teen Wolf, and Sazon Booya are some of the highlighted producers.
Sazon Booya - Mis Armas |Verano De Moombahton| by Sazon Booya Munchi - Jimi Knows by Munchi
Hostage - Straight Raw by HOSTAGE

3) The Spring Of Moombahton
By far the longest release of the year was this massive compilation put together by Lightening Eyez and set free on the first of August despite its title.  Featuring both Light and Dark sides of moombahton and released simultaneous with the even larger re:BIRTH of Wildstyle comps, this 46 track set showcased the up and coming nature of the genre.  The through note of versatility again shined as listeners were treated to the gamut of styles intertwining their way into the moombahton subconscious.  Producers like Flubba, SAUR, 2 Deep, DJ MADD OD, and J-Trick flexed their muscles along with many others.
J-Trick & Anndyk - Blaze It (Original Moombahcore Mix) by J-TRICK Jungle Toaster by flubba
2Deep & babySTEPS - Horn Swag (Original Mix) by 2 DEEP
Top 2 after the jump!
